August 2011 Meeting

August 1st – Colonial Nature Photography Club Meeting

Meeting called to order at 6:34 PM by Dane Clingan

46 members and guests present including 3 members from the Hampton Roads Digital Photo Club.

Barbara reported that member Theresa Danforth had her picture chosen as the image of the month in the July issue of Virginia Wildlife.

Barbara also discussed the fall trip to the James River National Wildlife Refuge.  This trip is being done special for our club and is limited to 20 attendees.  The trip will be on Sunday, October 16th.  Meeting time will be sent out later, but members are reminded to notify Barbara to RSVP.  This will be an awesome chance to get some gorgeous sunrise on the James pictures, fall foliage, and maybe some bald eagles and other wildlife.  Pictures will be collected and discussed for the November meeting.

All members were reminded to check their current email addresses on the mailing list to ensure they were correct.  Contact Barbara if you are not getting emails.

Dane took a moment to review the photo submission guidelines with the group.  When submitting photos for the monthly assignment please remember:

-pictures should be less than 500k

-pictures should be less than 1024 pixels

-Have your first name as part of the file name

-Send prior to Sunday please

Pictures from the photo assignment ‘Waterscapes’ were reviewed and discussed.

Members are reminded there is no September meeting due to the Labor Day holiday.

Photo assignment for the upcoming October meeting will be ‘Sky & Clouds’ and will be held on Monday, October 3rd.

Nature photographer Billy Dodson was the guest speaker for the evening.  Billy informed the group that he is a musician and a speech writer first, and then a photographer.

Billy is a retired Naval Officer who has been a professional wildlife photographer since 2005. His work has been published in the following magazines: Outdoor Photographer, Nature’s Best Photography, Asian Photography and Virginia Wildlife Magazines. Both the African Wildlife Foundation and the Nature Conservancy use his photos extensively for public relations and fundraising.

His primary photo assignments are in Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania and he takes several groups a year.  His presentation include travel do’s and don’ts, places to go, equipment to take, when to go, and many other hints and information about traveling with photo equipment.  After his discussion, he presented and reviewed some pictures from a recent Africa trip.
